Kirsan Ilyumzhinov: "During the whole struggle I was very calm"

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was re-elected FIDE President in the Chess Academy building yesterday. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov who was running from the Russian Chess Federation, defeated Anatoly Karpov whose candidacy was proposed by national federations of France and Germany. Gabriel Sargissian: “Hope we’ll play better by the end”

The Armenian team, which won two Olympiads in a row, Turin-2006 and Dresden-2008, plays rather inconsistently here. Yesterday Armenia lost to Azerbaijan, and today they defeated Poland. In the open section Russia-1 had a good chance to surpass Ukraine. Russia took the lead after Sergey Karjakin defeated Pavel Eljanov. Two other games ended in a draw, but Zakhar Efimenko managed to win in the ending against Vladimir Malakhov to tie the score. Read more »

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was re-elected FIDE President

The elections of the FIDE President for the next 4 years period were held in Khanty-Mansiysk on 29 September 2010. The current President won with a margin of 40 votes. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov nominated by the Russian Chess Federation, won 95 votes while his opponent, Anatoly Karpov, nominated by Germany and several other Western states, got 55 votes. Read more »
