1300 players from 144 countries took start at the Chess Olympiad

The 39th Chess Olympiad started today in Khanty-Mansiysk, the capital of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Ugra. There are 148 men’s teams and 114 women’s teams from 144 countries competing for the main trophy in team chess events.

A symbolic first move on the first boards of the Russian men's and women's teams was made by Natalya Komarova, the Governor of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. “When making this move I was as nervous as if I have to play – and win! – this game”, said Natalya Vladimirovna afterwards. Together with the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov she examined the playing halls of the Olympiad.

As a rule, in the early rounds of such massive competitions the strongest teams play against the weaker ones, and the main question is whether the favorites win their matches with the perfect score. 39 teams in the men’s tournament won their matches 4-0. Read more »

– Is it often the case that you celebrate your birthdays away from home?
- It happens. Professional chess players play a lot.

Natalya Komarova: "Now we are expecting His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia"

The Governor of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug Ugra Natalya Komarova made her first move 1.d2-d4 on the first board for the Russian team on the first day of the 39th World Chess Olympiad. Thereafter the Governor gave the press-conference to the journalists where they talked chess.

- Natalya Vladimirovna, do you have a festive feeling?
-I start having it only now because before I was under a constant stress as well as all the organizers of this massive event. After having made the first move, I felt better and relieved.

- Why did you decide not to make the famous Ostap Bender’s move 1. E2-e4?
 - There are several reasons for this. First of all, this right belongs to the FIDE President, who, as far as I know, constructed the Chess City in the capital of Kalmykia and named it New-Vasyuki. The second reason is that I have already made this famous move in my symbolic game in Moscow. Seriously speaking, I had to take into consideration the player, indeed when making his move I felt myself responsible not only to play the game but to win it. Read more »

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is confident that Khanty-Mansiysk has become not only a star, but a bright star as the capital of the world chess”
 - Today I had an opportunity to meet the members of men and women teams , arbiters and representatives of dozens of countries. All I heard was delighted impressions about this Olympiad. All the participants are united in the opinion that the conditions provided here are perfect. And the most important is that the weather seems to have been, so to say, ordered – the FIDE President joked.

- Did you enjoy the Opening Ceremony?
 - The FIDE Leadership and the Organizing Committees in the countries hosting the events of such level are making efforts to meet the requirements of the International Olympic Committee Summer and Winter Olympic games. The Opening Ceremony was held on the highest world level. We experienced the level that all other organizers should aim at. In our conversation with Turkish delegates from Istanbul-the venue of the 2012 Olympiad, they admitted that it will be hard for them to comply with the standards of Khanty-Mansiysk. Read more »
